An author may have a completed manuscript, or just an idea. If the manuscript is not completed I can help, advise, and encourage through to its completion. Authors may write fiction or non-fiction, from pictorial studies to hybrid academic texts. Any book will need some editing. Perhaps a basic copy-editing clean up, (addressing spelling and grammar); or it may be the author is completely lost and needs to be mentored towards a positive result on paper. The actual content of the book may need addressing. If fiction: Do all the plot lines work? Are there loose ends? With non-fiction: Is the book structured well? All these and other aspects may need attention.
All books need copyediting, whatever the views of an author. We all miss our own mistakes. It is also a proven fact that reading on the screen is much less efficient than reading on paper.
A first meeting, in person or on line, costs little, as does early consideration of the project and basic advice. It is only when editorial steps are agreed that work starts to cost. Fees for editorial work are negotiated directly with the editor.
While editorial work is being carried out, and if the author wants to proceed further, basic designs and cover ideas can be looked at. No charges are made until actual execution takes place. Photography can be commissioned as needed, and illustrations sourced.
The aim with the editorial work on a book is to end up with a publishable manuscript. That can only be achieved with a final proofing by a third party to make sure there are no typograpical mistakes in it. Once that has been accomplised I will put the book into pages and proof it once more. Again it needs checking for in transferring it from the software in which it was created, into the page layout software the odd technical mistake can creeep in, and the book also needs checking for the chapter headings and running heads (along the tops of the pages) which are formatted specially.
When the book is fully checked a proof copy of the actual printed version can be obtained for further checking and when all is acceptable the book is passed for publication.
If publication as an ebook is required then formatting takes place once the final manuscript has been agreed.
